Gala Day Then & Now

The very first Gala Day & Garden Party was held at the Rebecca Nurse Homestead in June of 1912. It was a way to rally ongoing support for the preservation efforts and express gratitude to supporters who helped fund the restoration of the house. They continued to hold these parties annually after their annual association meeting with the purpose being to help raise more funds for other restoration projects. When the property was first purchased it had been a “modernized” farmhouse, the Rebecca Nurse Memorial Association had to raise $7,000 to purchase the property and a large sum of money to then restore it to the 17th century time period.
